Hi
I've been looking everywhere for a Socket A CPU AMD but they seem to be like gold dust.
The one i want is a 3200+xp.But will take no lower than 2400+xp.
The ones i dont want is Sempron.
Other than E-bay i cant find them anywhere! And i dont fancy buying of Ebay as they seem to me to be quite expensive,(but i will if i have to.)
Can anyone help me find one.Or maybe someones got one we can come to some arrangement on.
Please please help me.

What's wrong with Semprons?

iirc semprons are cut down versions of the old socket A athlon xp. I think they have less cache and dont perform as well.

If I had to go socket A I would go for an AXP over a sempron tbh. You still can get hold of them new but they are very rare. Check ebay or members market - lots of people will be selling for upgrades to A64 systems.

xp cpu's are hard to get ahold of and if you find one then chances are it'll not be cheap. selling my xp3200 soon to upgrade to 3700sd and can get more for it now than I payed for it new 5 months ago new :D !!!
1 thing if you get a 3200 you'll need ddr400 memory and a mobo (also got 2 of these for sale soon ;) ) that'll support them, so depending on what parts you've got atm might be cheaper going 64bit.
e-mails in trust if you want to get in touch ;)

If you can spare an extra £40, you might be better considering the 64 bit route. pick up an asrock dual sata and
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939) - OEM Price: £87.95 (£103.34 Including VAT at 17.5%)

they have the same cache and a higher fsb ie perform faster the the thouroughbreds

there are barton semprons that perfor exactly the same as athlon xp bartons

AFAIK there was only one ever Barton Sempron on socket A, the
Sempron 3000+ with a clock of 2000MHz, 166MHz FSB & 512 L2 cache. As such it would be close to a Barton Athlon XP 2800+ in performance. So not a bad buy if you can get one. Nor would the Sempron 2800+ (though based on the Thoroughbread B core) it is the same as the Sempron 3000+ except with only 256 L2 cache (about that of a Barton Athlon XP 2600+ in performance).

I must have damaged my old cpu as i had to buy a new motherboard.so i went and swaped them over and when i put in the cpu i didnt do it properly it reads in post beep and windows its a xp1800+ when its supposed to be a 2400+.my motherboard is a ISA, PCI, AGP
Model K7VT4APro
Version 1.0x
BIOS Vendor American Megatrends Inc.
BIOS Version AMIINT - 10
BIOS Release Date 09/08/05
BIOS Properties Plug and Play, Flash, AGP

my jumpers on board is set to fsb 200 i tried 333 but it wouldnt bootup.
when i set it to a 2400+ in bios it crashes,so at moment i managed to set it up as 2200+,and it seems fine there.
my memory is ddr 3200 but in bios i can only set it to 333 instead of 400?
ive proberbly cocked up somewhere but apart from cpu? i dont know where.

ps i get scores of :
3dmark 05- 4828
3dmark 03- 10415
3dmark 06- 2322
aquamark 3- 35900something
all with a xfx 6800gs extrem edition
are they good scores with 2200+

as above the correct setting for the xp2400 is 133 as it has a fsb of 266. You also said that you'd like a xp3200 but having looked at the spec of your board it only supports 333fsb not 400 like almost all the 3200's are. Also it mentions that your board is fussy on which ddr400 memory it will accept and IIRC xp cpu's perform better when the memory and cpu speeds are running the same, not different as you are trying to do.

Edit: also found out that it will only run 1 stick of ddr400, and 2 sticks of ddr 266 or 333

Interesting.
Looks like there still are quite a few people left who need socket A cpus.
I sold my 2800+ barton in september, I got £95 for it, paid £50!
My Xp-M should fetch a lot the day I decide to sell.

For the price that most socket A's are going for you can have a socket 754 mobo and a 2800 Sempron. This will perform MUCH better than the 2800 performance rating makes out. If at all possible go this route.
