Socket A to 939 conversion

Hi

I'm trying to give a small boost to an aging socket A motherboard that my wife uses mainly for photos and a bit of video editing. At the moment it uses an amd XP-mobile 2600. Are there any converters to upgarde to 939?

None that I am aware off. The easiest way would be to upgrade to an ASROCK 939 dual sata 2 mobo in which case you would only need a 939 cpu which would let you transfer everything else across.

you can get a s939 for dirt cheap these days anyway

thanks for the help.

This is a PC I'm going to give to my wife when I build myself a new rig and I thought it would be nice to give it a bit more power as she messes about with photos a lot, editing etc.

Would £100 give it a significant performance boost? I use an AMD xp-mobile 2600, Abit-NFS v2 and 512 OCZ ram at the moment.

939 dual sata can be had pretty cheap (New about £45) these days also chips are the same (AMD3200 is £40)
£100 should get you both easily.

You should be able to change with very little outlay, socket A cpu's go for quite a premium on a certain auction site

Getting another 512MB RAM would definately speed things up too.

For those uses might well make more diff than a (new) processor actually, especially if the XP-M is nicely overclocked.

Should feel the difference even in windows etc too, I know I did on my old socket A setup.

I have a very similar set up to you and I have no speed issues with it (although I don't have something faster to compare it to). It does take a fair whack of time messing with videos in Vdub and playing around ripping DVDs though.

Maybe just get the RAM then take your wife out for a nice dinner with the change
