My friend wants to upgrade his Athlon XP 2000+, but doesnt know what to get. He has an Asus A7V8x and i was wondering what is the best CPU for him to get? Been looking around the bay at some 2800+, but any better recommendations?

you can get a 3200xp but they tend to be expensive. I think on the scale of things, from whats around today, upgrading the cpu to a 2800 or similiar seems pretty small. Id probably just get a new motherboard.

Officially nothing faster than 333 fsb depending on board revision and bios. so an xp 3000 333fsb model if you can get one at a decent price or you can try to overclock.

Sell up, an xp2000 palomino might be bought by someone with an even older board you can then bag a bargian used athlon 64 etc using ddr & agp.

Its getting really hard to justify these end of life boosts now that low end new base units are so cheap and auction prices for the desirable upgrade parts can be silly.

Yeah, seeing as you can get a x2 3800 939 for less than plenty of the socket A CPUS are selling for on the bay, an all round upgrade would be the better choice.

Mirroiring above; unless you can get a cheap 2800/3000 chip, it isn't worth fiddling with. If you want someone cheap then go for the X2 3800+ 939 which is only £40 ish or go for the Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 if he has a bit more cash to put into it.
