AMD moved to Socket AM2 (940-pins) mid last-year (2006), i.e. new mobo/chipsets & processors.

So, (by now) there are no Socket 939 mobos & processors being made anymore :(

my motherboard cant surely be outdated already?!?!

It can...

There's a few 939 processors still available at Overclockers I think, get them while they're hot :)

If changing mobo you will also need ddr 2 ram, as your ddr ram wont work.

In that case DO NOT GET AN AMD AM2 !!

Get a Intel Core + Mainboard and Ram (what you would need to do anyways)

It will be faster and cheaper

cheers guys

whats best chip to for pound/power? the 5200x2?

gaz

Either stick with your current X2 rig or upgrade to C2D, AM2 chips are not any faster than their 939 counterparts just with added DDR2 support.

The best bang for the buck combo is an E6300/E4300 with a mid range overclocking mobo (DS3/P5B/P5N-E) + 2Gb PC6400.
