Socket AM2 to support AM3 CPU's aka K8L

Yeah, I had read something similar, but of course at this stage its not set in stone.

Wouldn't be surprised to see it though, and it'd make a good upgrade path for anyone getting AM2.

It was really cool when you could just pop a dual core A64 into your existing mobo with just a bios upgrade, but this would top that.

Isn't K8L targeted at servers rather than desktops, though? Or am I getting confused again? ;) I suppose Opterons are the same and they are still pretty popular among enthusiasts, though, so would that be along those lines?

megh.... isnt the K8L a good way off yet? Conroe will be in most peeps pcs by then.
Conroe won't be in my PC for a year at the earliest.

And that will all depend on what's on the market at that time, so it might very well be K8L. ;)

no its not.
its something that i've seen posted on this forum a few times and its just not true.
K8L is a bit like the "core2" architecture and will be available in both Server and desktop versions... and maybe laptop but apparently AMD is working on something seperate for this.

FIrst you have 65nm K8 (rev. G is it?) in Q4 this year then K8L Q1 next year then a quad core K8 then a quad core K8L. That was the latest i heard.
AMD are also planning on making 1/2 series opterons for socket AM2. Personally i think the 4x4 platform will be very good... espeically if they make some useful co-processors to go in the second slot which is on the roadmap... maybe even just get the HTX slots on single socket boards. Next year is going to be exciting. Till then it looks pretty much like Intel will have it their own way in the enthusiast market.

it won't be called K8L either, they'll have core names like current san diegos and venices, i think its pretty much assured there'll be athlon varient of K8L and opteron varient, and proberbly a chopped down sempron version, K8 has followed the exact same trend

most certainly!

regarding what i said before... some more leaked "roadmaps" have shown up and it looks like the 65nm parts aren't scheduled till next year now.. which makes little sense unless there are problems with the yields which also doesn't seem likely. hmmmm

oh well we will just have to wait and see.

This sounds great, but essentially, it won't make much difference, because nvidia will release some vastly improved chipset later on which will mean you will want to get a new mobo anyway. There is a lot of reliance on nvidia as well to make sure they release the top chipsets for both systems etc and don't just phase stuff out.

AMD couldn't have done anything better though tbh if all this is correct though, and sounds great for small upgrades. Seems DDR2 is gonna be a short ride on amd...

Well a bloke down the pub told me that the 30mn process Oct (Sebastion) core and Pent (Eric) core chips will be out wraped in newspaper in Q5

You shouldn't have said that, it will be on the Inquirer within the next few hours. :p
