Hi ya fellas,

Just a quick question for you memory guru's.

Ive got an Acer Travelmate 4601 (DDR not DDR2 version) and ive bought 2GB of DDR400 for it.

It currently uses 2x256mb of Hynix DDR333.

Ive installed the new modules but the power light comes on and hdd light and that's it.

Could it be a bios issue?

Ive looked in the bios and can't find any configuration settings to alter (not seen if there's a hidden memory timing setup screen)

Any help appreciated as the memory cost me quite a lot.

The new modules are Samsung btw.

Cheers

Steve

What exactly are the specification of the modules you've bought - I'm assuming that you have bought 2x 1GB and not 1x 2GB?

It should support DDR333 - In 99% of cases you can use faster memory but there are the odd machine/motherboard out there that runs into problems with faster memory.
It should also be unbuffered and non-parity - two more important things, the machine is unlikely to boot with either buffered or parity modules installed.

Spec ive got from it is here:

Thank you for pointing that out (basically what i've said in my 1st post)

The DDR400 modules *should* scale down to run in my laptop.

Unless you've found some documentation to state that they will not run DDR400????

I posted this on the off chance that someone else has the same laptop and has upgraded to 1gb or 2gb using DDR400 modules or works in tech support and has experience of this issue.

yes in theory the should scale down but that always not the case
its really down to acer to supply a bios to fix the issue
but they will just say use right memory in 1st place.

To find the recommended memory for your laptop I used the memory configurator at the Crucial website.
www.crucial.com/uk
Crucial guarantee compatability as long as you use this to find out the modules you want.
If you punch in the details of your laptop it tells you the modules you should be buying.
One interesting thing to note.

On the Crucial website the 1GB modules that are compatible are listed as 128Meg x 64
A quick search on the part number you've given for the modules you have indicate the modules are 128mb x 8
That however could be just a typo somewhere.

Faster memory modules usually slow down to what a system can support - however note the word usually.
I days gone past I've found many a machine that wouldn't boot with a PC133 module for example and would only work with PC100. Some would only boot with PC66 modules and PC100 or PC133 just caused issues.
