I am looking at new sofas at the moment and had seen the following

http://www.dfs.co.uk/calvino/clv43almn#Gp1lCyEXr8xYvRGi.97

Very cheap, leather on seats and arms and faux on sides and rear. Been to two DFS stores and neither actually had it in to try (the 3 seater that is, one had an ex-display 2 seater, and it seemed okay, but not being able to try the 3 was off putting), but the width, height and depth specs are basically perfect for what I want.

Whilst at the store today I decided to pop into SCS two doors down and have a look in there and saw this

https://www.scs.co.uk/sisi-italia-t...ILDA-BLACK-CTRST-STITCH-GREY_CHROME-FOOT.html

Its a lot more expensive (I want a 3 and a 2 seat ideally) but it felt so nice to sit in. The two seater is bigger than most other two seaters I have seen and it turns out wouldn't fit where I need it to go, so I would have to get the snuggle chair (which oddly is the same width as most 2 seater leather sofas I have seen).

The SCS "sale" ends today, so am wondering if anyone has any experience of SCS and sofas, somewhere else I can look (I am based in SE London if it affects anything). I am not bothered about delivery times as I still need to prep the room, so 8-10 weeks delivery is easily cope-able or any other comments, as basically spending 3 times what I was originally looking at has obviously got me thinking.

both DFS and SCS aren't great retailers - standard springs (never 8 way hand tied, or even pocket sprung), the leather isn't of great quality, the padding is either fibre or down, never both (should be a springy core with a soft cover), and in some cases it's not glued and screwed properly.

bare in mind, you are paying for what you get. The UK is terrible for carpentry and sofas are sadly really bad.

PS

No furniture sale ends... haven't you heard the running joke?!

as you are in SE London, check out Darlings Of Chelsea, they are very over priced to be honest, but the quality is much better in comparrison.

Are there any high street retailers that offer more than DFS and SCS for quality?

We just bought a Loaf sofa, as well as one from Conran. Both are very nice but you do pay for it.

Try Loaf though, I think they're more reasonably priced, closer to that of SFS. Plus they offer cover for a couple of years where they will sort out any spillage or damage at all which is nice to have.

We bought our two sofas from Next about 8 years ago. Really preferred the styling in Next to the big sheds at that time. They're both still going strong.

Try Trade Secret in Oxford. It doesn't take too long to drive up from London and they have a warehouse full of sofas from John Lewis, Laura Ashley, Multiyork etc. at discounted prices. We got our last one from there which is Laura Ashley and should have been over £1.7k but their prices are up to 60% off. They'll deliver to you once you've chosen what you want.

Sofology is a little bit better but not by much... a group of these shops offer 0% finance... well most do (except darlings of chelsea :p)

We got ours from sofology in the end because we were sick of looking around, but if you want quality I wouldn't recommend them either (we were just sick of looking and couldn't agree on darlings of chelsea).

There's one we like in sofology but not sure if the quality is there.

Just looked at Darlings of Chelsea, not the cheapest are they!

We went into Sofology when looking - sales lady nabs to tell us they don't hassle you whilst looking around. A few minutes, she's popped up again asking if we've seen anything we like...

Got mine from Furniture Village. Bit more pricey than DFS/SCS but found the quality to be much higher!

Thanks for this recommendation. I live in Oxfordshire and had not heard of this place. I will be sure to check it out :)

I've had a sofa from furniture village for 5 years and it's still fine, which is a shame because my girlfriend and I have both decided we don't like scatter back sofas but can't justify getting rid of it.

Her parents bought a leather sofa from DFS about 3 years ago and it looks very poor by comparison. The arms are all lumpy and it creaks when you sit on it. I can't see how it's going to last much longer.

i bought 3 from Marks and Spencer about 6 months ago.

quality seems superb on them. they however aren't cheap but i managed to snag 25% off if you buy 2 or more items of furniture, as well as my aunts staff discount (gave her the cash to buy them).

it basically worked out that i paid for 2 small sofas and got the third large one for free. which meant it was actually rather cheap for what we got IMO. i haven't seen anyone with nicer sofas tbh but I would be slightly biased.

i got 2 x Highland Button Loveseat (one in red the other in purple)
the other a Copenhagen Large Sofa in grey/silver

all fabric sofas, much nicer than leather IMO which is either too cold or too hot
