Not too long ago I bought a pair of YN560III speedlites and a YN560-TX manual transmitter/controller to combine with a 580EX II (which I have added an optical slave to) to create a versatile and truly portable studio for home and on location. I’ve done a fair amount of work in a fully-fledged studio especially when I was at uni, but I’ve done very little with off camera flash on location and the prospect of that excites me.

First off I am blown away by how awesome this Yongnuo stuff is for the price despite having been apprehensive about its quality. Combining the speedlites with this controller is sublime and thus far they haven’t failed to fire once.

Example of what I’ve shot playing around at home with this gear:

Anyway, there’s only so much you can do with hard unmodified light. I’ve got brollies too which are okay and great for on location work, but when using them in a makeshift home studio they are impossible to control and cause too much spill (a nightmare of light bouncing around in a small white walled room), not to mention yacky brolly catch lights.
So I really need soft boxes.. My criteria for these are:
  • As large as reasonably possible to use with flashguns
  • Super portable and easy to set up/down
  • Durable
  • Not hideously expensive
I’ve heard of systems which enable you to attach all manner of modifier to speedlites like honeycomb, snoots, beauty dishes, barn doors which would be cool too. But first and foremost is good soft boxes.
I’ve done as much searching online as possible to find advice or reviews on this gear but so far haven’t found anything which gives me any confidence. Maybe someone on here can speak from their own experience and point me in the right direction?
