Softening varnish

My grandfather had some varnish, but most of it has gone hard/solid. He told me that he added linseed oil to it to try to soften it, but that didn't work
How could he soften the varnish?

If it's hard throw it out? Get some new varnish.

Buy some new varnish.

I you were to put anything in I would say white spirit or another oil based solvent

However it's only about £5-10 for a large tin so just go and buy some more. Especially since you've now contaminated it with linseed oil which is organic
