Softshadows in fear not supported by ANY ATI cards??? :o(

AFAIK know the card supports soft shaddows but the performance is so dire with it turned with ATI hardware that it is assumed ther is a dirver bug or somethingand so no benchmarks use soft shaddows in fear because of the problems with the ATI cards.

It looks pretty poor (the effect) anyway IMO.

Even on Nvidia cards there is a big performance drop.

I tried it on my 7800GTX, and I can't tell the difference expect for my FPS drop. :D Seems to be slightly blurrier shadow edges if anything at that... not worth it, the game looks good without it. ;)

I upgraded my PC to play FEAR better and I also found soft shadows to be a let down. In all fairness i can see the difference, it's just that they don't run along side AA. So it's either x4 AA and normal (but very good in FEAR) shadows or no AA and slightly better shadows at a moderate performace hit. If you are playing at 1600x1200 or more then maybe it's worth it as AA is less appreciable, but at anything less then there is little point.

Once I installed fear I popped everything on to max including softshadows(but only 1024x768). I can't really complain about the performance, average is a bit over 80fps in the test. I have a x1800xt pe btw. I haven't tried without softshadows yet, as I get enough fps with it on.
