Software Deployment without SCCM

Up until now I've have been using SCCM for software deployment. In current circumstances budget wont quite stretch to SCCM / System Center 2012.

We have too many applications to manage it all via group policy (or at least without a great deal of effort) so just curious as what everyone else is using to deploy apps on windows if you haven't got SCCM? if it makes any difference we are mostly using windows 7 with 2008r2 servers running on Hyper-V.

Oh dear... On that scale the budget must stretch otherwise from my knowledge this is going to be a nightmare. Before SCCM we used zenworks but I'm unsure of any other methods for that many machines.

Have a dig about on the Edugeek forums, there's a lot of software deployment stuff on there.

Thank you for the suggestions, got a lot to look at. Getting a quote for PDQ Deploy/Inventory as its licensed per admin not end user might be fairly cheap.

Also I've spotted http://localupdatepubl.sourceforge.net/ which allows 3rd party app deployment via WSUS. Anyway have to agree that on the scale required anything apart from SCCM is likely to be a real headache.
