Software for creating newspapers/magazines

Is there any specialised software out there for this?

I know Microsoft Publisher isn't too bad, but I'm curious to find out if there is other alternatives out there with a high focus on layout/design?

InDesign is the more flexible these days, both are expensive, what type of magazine are you looking to create? if its for a club or something there are cheaper alternatives.
