I've found a software kvm that you install on both machines and then just use one keyboard and mouse. Has anyone else used the software option instead of a switch? I'm gonna give it a try this weekend to see what it's like.

Errmmm, how do you plug a single keyboard and mouse into both machines without a switch box of some kind? Or are you actually takling about some kind of remote control software?

Dunno but this is the link I found:

Just wondered if anyone had used this or anything similar.

Basically it's just remote control software, the only "unique" feature of it is that it stops dialogue boxes from the main desktop appearing on top of the remote desktop and therefore removes a potential source of confusion. What you do lose is performance, the screen refresh and responsiveness is determined by network bandwidth.

If the second PC you want to control is in a different room then this might be a decent solution, if it's under the same desk as your main PC get a hardware switch.

You can get a Hardware KVM for as little as a tenner!... I did!.. Works like a charm!... 'Ctrl.. Ctrl.. F2' and Im on me Linux Box, 'Ctrl.. Ctrl.. F1' and I'm back on my XP Home PC... and as I've routed the Audio of the Linux Box to the AUX-in of the XP Machine I can play music on one and still hear the sounds from the other whilst working!..
