Software License Question

Hi,

Have a query that I would appreciate if someone could help me with. Here goes.

About 3/4 years ago my dad purchased a brand new laptop along with a fully licensed copy of Intuit QuickBooks 2003 (an small business accounts package). Upon installing the software it informs you that you have 15 uses of the software before you have to activate it across the telephone, fine.

Fast forward to last week, the HDD in my dads laptop dies, no problem, its kinda old now. I change the HDD, re-install everything including his QuickBooks 2003, enter the license key, all is well.

Now today I get a call from my dad saying he has used up all his 15 'uses' and then proceeded to get the activation key by phoning Intuit. Intuit are claiming that they no longer support 2003, that they cannot supply him the activation key and that he must purchase Quickbooks 2008 (£250-300). Surely this can't be right ?!?!

He owns a fully paid for licensed piece of software for which they are now telling him he can't use because they no longer support. I can understand that they no longer provide tech support, patches and updates. But this seems totally unfair.

Assuming it's a perpetual licence they must allow you to use the software. Do you have a copy of the licence agreement?

Does seem unfair to be honest though I can sympathise with Quicken to a small degree. Business accounting software should be updated regularly to allow for changes in law and taxation especially.

Most finincial accouting software houses won't support older versions at all and having worked for a dealer in the past I can say that your scenario is pretty commonplace - support is frequently withheld; some licenses are specific on this, and some not.

Good luck with the software license search - in any case you'll need a sympathetic support analyst to get anywhere.
