Software that would shut hard drives down?

I have 4 external drives and 2 internal.. most of my drives seem to be on most of the time and getting hot.

Any software that would shut them down and allow me to switch them on again once I decide?

Windows will do it as long as they're not being used and will spin them up when you want to access them, it's in the power settings somewhere.

^^ Spot on - go into control panel and look into power saving options. Lookup advanced options and there will be an option to power down drives.
