I usually do a clean windows install every 6 months or so and was wandering if there was any software which would scan my computer and recommend software.

For example if I did a fresh Windows 7 install I might have to download the latest Java as well as DirectX and Google Chrome.

So my question would be; is this possible?

Not exactly what you are after but it'll allow you to select most of the apps people use and install them all in one go whilst you go and make a cup of tea! Advantage is that it's always downloading the latest versions, saves a lot of hassle.

In my opinion the best way is to just install things as and when you need them. If you have a pre-defined list you fall into the trap of installing them just for the sake of it. If you can use your computer quite happily without Java, QuickTime, Shockwave player or even Flash then it's better to do so.

Also, if you're reinstalling with that sort of frequency look into taking a windows image backup.

That's very true, thank you.

I like the though of a fresh install, even if it does the same thing as what you suggested, might make one anyway in case of an emergency, cheers.
