NOt exactly software but I am just starting off looking at SEO and forums such as www.seobook.com are helping me no end. Just joined syndk8.net but haven't had a good read there.
I find picking up info from people doing it a bit easier than reading about it

it dosent take very much at all to see the improvements, then you learn how to manipulate for other not so related keywords that you may want to target
