Software to monitor internet speed over time?

Does anyone know of any program that I could keep running for most of the day and it would periodically check the current internet speed?

Having tons of issues with internet being wildly inconsistent throughout the day, and would love to have some data on when and how frequent the dips/outages are.

Speedof.me is a speed test website that can export your results as a csv file. Would have to be manually run but is a possibility.

If it's packet loss/poor pings then set your router to reply to external pings and configure a free latancy monitor - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

you want jdast tool, I used this to collect data in the wars with virgin media,
you schedule regular download of a lump of data eg http://download.thinkbroadband.com/10MB.zip and it generates a csv / pretty graph
.. hopefully still free non-commercial use - great tool

Is there anything like this I could have running automatically on a tablet/phone to look for issues with wifi?

There is RouterStats which charts and logs speed and noise margin every few mins through the day. It does only get its speed and noise data off the modem's stats page so it might not necessarily give you working speeds / congestion.
It is not compatible with all modems though, usually html based admin pages and not so much flash based ones but there's a list on the website...

I remember someone rigged up a raspberry pi to do this kind of thing and it updated you like here:

One guy used it to tweet his ISP, or submit a ticket to their support. So basically cool stuff and educates you at the same time!
