Is there any 'stealth' versions of VNC/Remote Desktop to allow me to view my daughter's PC desktop without alerting her? I don't want any indication that I'm connected, but I need to make sure she's not accessing sites that she shouldn't.

I'm sure some will say that this is an infringement of her liberties/big brotheresque, but she's only 7 and it would put my mind at rest...

With any VNC viewer, you can select an 'Input Only' tick box. She shouldn't notice it, if you're connected all of the time - she'd just think the changed icon was how it's meant to be. Some VNC connections also have a tick box to disable the change in icon.

Personally, I like Tight VNC.

Get some Internet logging software rather than having to watch all the time? Much easier to search the logs than miss her clicking something.

As she's 7, you've got every right to protect her from things! I've just done part of an essay on the vulnerability of younger and older Internet users :)

Any recommendations on logging software? I know I can check IE history, but I'd prefer something a bit more automated to avoid having to check every URL...

Just set her PC up to use OpenDNS and configure it to block whatever site categories you want. Not 100% effective but should be more than adequate for a 7 year old. This is certainly going to be better than covertly watching over her activities all the time. What use is that going to be anyway, I mean it's not going to stop her from visiting some hardcore XXX sites is it, and what exactly do you plan to do when you see some flesh on the screen, run in screaming, after she's already witnessed it?

Nothing to recommend, never had to use it. What others have said above though, she's 7, no need for unlimited access. Surely she's just going on to look at CBBC website or something? Lock it down to what she needs, then it's a weight off your mind.

Yeah, but it's getting a list of sites. She likes google for pictures (animals and stuff) which makes it a bit more difficult...

Simply set the VNC taskbar icon to disabled/hidden. It's in the VNC registry settings.

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3,"DisableTrayIcon"=dword:00000001
