software upgrades via app store for free?

Hey, have been downloading loads of free software via the app store for the iphone.
However, have noticed that quite a lot that used to be free, have switched to be had for a price.
Now was wondering, if there was an update available for one of these now not free software, if you downloaded the update, if you got charged?
ie: is this a sneaky way to make you part with money without you knowing till a bit too late?

I downloaded Breakclassic when it was free. (They now have a free version called Breakclassiclite).

However, I can download the updates for it, for free, even though its now a £1.79 app.
I'd imagine its the same for the others.
