Right, am I missing something...?

Can you download a 64-bit version of Solaris or OpenSolaris? I can find reference to them and various installers for 64-bit versions, but no actual download - there's only x86 and SPARC.

OpenSolaris x86 and x64 are identical.

Download x86 (Build 106 available from GenUnix - Build 107 OpenSolaris.org)

These are both the latest Binary Spins and will get you a Beta of OpenSolaris 2009.4 (personally I would choose 106 for now)

As soon as OpenSolaris detects a 64-Bit CPU it runs in 64-Bit mode.

HTH

I'll give OpenSolaris a bash. Got some software that it seems to be picky and insist on having 64-bit OS - I suspect anyway, need to try out my theory.
