I just sold my Asus 5870 for £152 which I think is amazing considering its age and the price you can get a current gen card for. I've upgraded to a 7950 VaporX which is actually twice as fast in games such as Tombraider.

Not that I'm complaining but I'm a bit confused why it sold for that much.
Is there something about the 5870 and the crazy prices it's selling for that I don't know? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

^^ I was going to do the same thing, I had several 5870's in my watch list, they all sold for £125-£150+ (inc p&p), I think it might be something to do with bitcoin mining??
anyway I changed my mind when some users were still having issues with the new card and the games bundle had been withdrawn from the offer, but I might still sell my 5870 and grab a different brand 7950

I don't know the first thing about bitcoin mining but the 5870 does look like it is a popular card for that sort of stuff. Maybe I should have kept it for that..Lol.

then there's lots of fools about because they are being snapped up at £120-£150+

Well considering you can get a used 7950 or 7870 for around that which are properly supported by the latest drivers I can't see why anyone would pay £150 for a 2 generation old card.

They obviously have something about them that makes them desireable. I have seen them used a lot in bitcoin mining. But for games, 78 or 79 series will dominate it.

sold mine on the bay in mint condition boxed for £95 a couple of weeks back :o my price was based on what others were selling and what you could get for not much more !

Yep, 5870 are very good Bitcoin mining cards.

Thanks to Biffa, I managed to pick one up on here for £65, which I think is a more reasonable price.

Incidentally, anyone interesting in bitcoin mining hardware should check this out:

The important number is the Mhash rate. As you can see, 5870s do rather well compared to the other cards of a similar type.

No, its the first column you should be looking at. Somewhere in the region of 350-450 MHashes.

Oh, and I am not sure where you are looking, but in my table it says roughly 2Mhashes/J, which is very good.

tempted to sell mine and upgrade to a current gen since i dont think ill ever get into bit coin mining anyway :D

By that chart the 5870 beat a 6970 and use less power 188w vs 250w

and if you comapre it to nvidia cards it a 5870 will beat 3 almost 4 680s !!!

Madness!
