sold iphone apple pay not working on watch

Hi just erased and removed my iphone and made sure my cards were on the watch before, now no bank cards on the watch and it says i cant add any as im not connected to the cloud, on a watch 5 cellular and calls working, any ideas ?

You've erased the iPhone and now you can't use Apple Pay on the watch. Is that right?

I believe that Apple Pay on the watch uses cards in your wallet on the iPhone. If the phone has been erased, the cards have been erased from the wallet.

yeah, @Feek I think that's what he was meaning? Its all controlled from setting on the iPhone? That correct?

Thanks to you both, yes you are correct I thought I could get away with selling the phone and use the watch while out to save carrying my wallet but it appears thats not the case, oh well a week or so I will live with it
