Sold my car - what to replace it with?

Well after just over 2.5 years of ownership I've decided to let the RS4 go. It's not quite gone yet but the chap will pick it up this month. I am quite sad and it's a bit surreal at the moment as I can't believe I won't have it anymore. I would say it's by far one of the best cars I've owned and driven and I will get another one (even with the scary bills ;)) next year/year after.

Reason for selling is to raise some money to go towards a deposit for a house.

The budget will be no more than £3.5k and I don't really care what it is as long as it's reliable, and economical. Insurance after the RS4 is going to be easy (can I hold the insurance over until I find a replacement???).

I am thinking of getting something that is already converted to LPG - is this a good or bad idea?

TIA

James

This sounds like you want something boring from the blue oval.
Can you survive coming from an RS4 though?

I'm going to recommend a Leon Cupra (180) even though I know it'll throw up some bills along the way.

I thought that might be the stock answer here ;) I'm not averse to one but I am not the biggest fan of them either....

Not really :( I have access to my dads 911 though if I want some speed.

A crap car also allows me to put the missus on and get her back driving again.

Edit: Don't want a seat again...

Not quite as extreme, but i have just downgraded from an A3 2.0T FSi to a 2.0 mondeo, i miss my audi, but i'm not that disappointed either as the mondeo is quite well specced, everything i would like except leather and bluetooth, however, there have been a good few times where i've missed the extra power of the A3 if i'm honest. At least i know i'll be back in a German car in a year or 2 anyway. That's the way i see it.

stick with the german,
something out of left field how about a bora 4motion?

still semi potent with 200bhp and 4wd you'll find one within your budget with ease (also consider the golf sibling) reliable your not going to loose much between now and selling it on in a year or 2 and its not a mondeo :)

ah never saw the economical part

bora 4motion 1.9 tdi then :) you might have to search a while to find one though they are a bit on the scarce side

Cheers for the suggestions I was thinking something from VW.

The economy would be nice but I'm very used to sticking £75 of super in and then refilling 220 miles later...

Nobody has commented on my LPG thoughts?

Takes a while to recoup what you spend on an LPG conversion, how many miles do you do a year?

He did actually state that he was looking for something already converted to LPG.

Of all the cars I've used/been in/seen with LPG conversions, 9 times out of 10 they feel like they are running badly, they throw up problems, and even the mechanic I use reckons that they are only worthy of steering clear of (mainly due to most conversions being utter balls).

Jag V6 S-Type up the road is on gas, and they've had no end of problems with it.

Fair play. I wouldn't LPG myself as I know it'll never get back to me in the time I'll have this car.

In the 2.5 years i had the RS4 i did 20k. So I'm not a high user at all. But I do work trips @ 41p per mile and it would be nice not to spend over half that on fuel ;)

I've seen a few cars with the prins system which is supposedly the best one out there...

I've had two LPG converted motors, both have been fine. You just need to make sure you get a good conversion and not one done by a bunch of monkeys.

LPG basically halves your fuel bill, not sure if i would want to go out of my way to find one though for your miles per year.

I suppose if you come across one already done its a bonus as long as its reliable.

As Paradigm said there can be problems, again mileage varies some people swear by them.

You will inevitably be buying into a big engined probably complicated car if its had an LPG conversion, no one converts a 1600 Focus do they.

bet thats a shame to see it go. from memory yours was quite an epic spec wasnt it?

if you get a mondeo i recon youd be looking for a tree to hang yourself from within hours.

how important is "quick" in your new criteria?

Thought that would be the consensus - I shall see what I find!

Matt82 - yeh quite a big spec - 425bhp, B7 brakes all round, uprated suspension & arbs, almost full options, and a few other bits like short shift, DTS, MRC air filter etc. Awesome car and have just done 300 miles in it and will 100% miss it :(
