Vertex 2 Solid State Drives deliver unprecedented performance for the complete gamut of gaming and professional multimedia applications. Would 60gb really be enough for me? Im looking to stick it in my '12 MBP that will be arriving any day now for OS, Office and various other programs, nothing major. would have like a cheaper 120bg Samsung 830 deal:(

60GB should be ample!

People buy SSD's as boot drives which is why 60GB and 120GB are the most popular sizes. As people still use a mechanical drive for storage.

would there be any point in buying two of these and raiding them for boot (windows+office+apps) drive?

or is the speed increase negligible in raid because they are already so fast?

Depends what your doing with them!

As an OS drive, RAID does not give huge advantages, as the biggest performance boost comes from 0.1ms access time, which RAID does not improve.

If however your moving around a lot of large files, or editing large photographs or anything which involves large read/writes, then yes RAID improves performance.

Anyone who states that 60GB is not big enough for a boot drive are talking total rubbish. I have Win7, all my drivers, plus my browser on mine and I still have over 25GB spare. At what point are updates/drivers ever going to go past 25GB? Never.

Stonking deal even for a little games drive. Just move games on and off it as you please.

I have a 30GB SSD in my laptop at home, its been in there for 3 years now nearly and its still got approx 4GB free. :)

So 60GB is more than ample!

Hi there

Here is some benchmarks from the Vertex 2E connected to a SATA3 port:-

As you can see the performance is pretty damn good, and all for £29.99 Inc. VAT. :D :D :D

On SATA2 the performance might be marginally better as they are obviously optimised for SATA2. :)

Gibbo do you reckon you would get around 100-125 read and write on a Sata 150 chip?

I suspect so yes, it will just hit the limit of the controller. If this is a desktop PC you could also always buy a controller card, we sell them for like £20 or for £25 buy a SATA3 controller. :)

not entirely sure what I'll be using it for, but at that price, figured I'd buy one anyway, will probably end up being my BF3/GW2 drive :D
That or put in a caddy for removable storage. as someone said earlier, it would be very cruel of you to now find a way to do a bloody silly price on a 240gb drive

Unfortunately the Adata SP900 256GB deal is the best we got at the moment. Month/Quarter end is over now so the deals have all faded of a little.

So for now this is it! :)

Its for a laptop unfortunatly otherwise i would :) are these read and write speeds really taht much faster than a standard mechnical drive?

The benefit comes more from the instant access time more so than anything. A 5400rpm drive will be over 10ms on access time, all SSD's are circa 0.1ms, so 100x faster.

The RAID benchmarks from a pair in RAID 0:-

I've placed these results next to single drive results for easy comparison. The only difference is the single drive had zero data on it. In RAID 0 the drives had Win7 Pro loaded onto them. :)

I've decided I'm going to cancel my order as I am going to get another 120GB of the same model when they go up to £50. I assume, Gibbo that the 120GB will still be sold by yourselves? Or are they totally sold out from the pre-orders? I have created a post in the Customer Service thread.

Thanks.

Knew I should have gotten two of the 120GB at the time. But hindsight and all that. And after carefully assessing both of my machines, I can now say that 120GB would be sufficient for them both.

The 120GB sold out but a few people cancelled and went with the 60GB, but due to so few the price is £59.99, in we get a few more spare we will do a TODAY ONLY at £49.99 so well keep checking the daily deals everyday at 9am :)

Gibbo ive not had a despatch note for my 120gb so any chance i can collect it tomorrow if i bring some id with me? I plan on getting a 60b too so kills 2 birds weith one stone :)

Give sales a call first thing or stick a post in cs section, should not be an issue. :)

Hi there

We shall be doing a last chance buy on the 120GB at 9am at £49.99, I am giving you forum guys a heads up. :)

tempted but 120gb better value in places

The 120GB in other places does not compare performance wise. Its far slower and uses a rather buggy controller. We could have purchased them but remembered how poor they were, so we gave them a miss.
