Hi all,

Looking at this build as a daily workhorse for solidworks modelling. Dont do any photoview, rendering or simulation, just modelling in 3d and 2d drawings. (this means, as far as i can tell, that 95% of my work is single threaded so highest clock speed, or performance, on single thread is important.)

Dont need OS or peripherals or monitor. Already have Quadro 4000 gpu.

Any advice welcome, thanks.

I have chosen all in 1 cooler because for some weird reason we often move pcs around the office. giving quite heavy coolers to people i can see going badly. although all in ones maybe not fully suitable if it leaks.

Why change of motherboard and powersupply?

You won't have any issues with a closed loop cooler. I used to take mine (with a h50) to and from uni once a month. It coped fine.

I don't know why he changged the psi, the one you picked was spot on.

As for the motherboard you picked a matx board, while not a big issue standard atx boards normally have better overclocking abilities. Id personally go for the Z77X UD3H

My only concern about the cooler really is longevity more than anything, if i were to get a bunch of these for business systems, would i see a few of them drop out dead after a year? I suppose the decision is between wether to risk damage from a heavy jarr with a tower cooler, or possibility of shorter life with a all-in-one loop...

There doesn't seem to be that sort of problem with CLC's (closed loop coolers) as youd expect. Yes, some of them are faulty but thats very rare, the main problem people have with them is Pump noise. On the majority of products the pumps are silent and unnoticable, though on others the are quite audiable, not great for a working environment..

You don't get these problems with big air coolers, but like you say if they are getting moved around a lot you don't want to risk damage to other components. Especially the Graphics cards.

In your situation i would personally opt for the CLC's as they are more portable and will not cause any issues with damage. They will also last a long time, I had a secondhand H50 for a Year (it had been bought a good 18 months beforehand) and it still works perfectly now. :)

Are the any reliable solutions for holding the graphics card solid? I've seen stands that stop it bending over time in a case, but look like they would slip out if you move the case which seems to defeat the point.

Thanks for the reassurance. Now i have to do the hard part- persuading somebody else to spend money on the upgrade....

Another method is to get a GPU backplate.. This will hold the card in position and protect it from damage from above (ie the CPU cooler).

Im not sure you can get them for the Quadro 4000 though..

Another option is to flip things up (hear me out).. You can buy cases that mount the GPU above the CPU Cooler. Silverstone are the main ones that do that. Im pretty sure they do it for "thermal reasons" but it may suit you idea..

My case, the TJ08-E is one of them, though big CPU coolers (like mine) sit very close to the GPU...

I think the Raven series use this method too.. Check out Lian Li aswell. :)
 
Yea, i know about the alternate motherboard mounting and thus GPU mounting too. will have to have a look into that but case budget will be on a limit i think. And yes that was the thing i saw.
