Hi guys wandering if anyone can help.

Basically I need to get the internet connection from my flat to the otherside of a large yard full of sheds. The distance is only about 120m as the crow flies but if going up and over sheds and walls it will be more like 150m maybe slightly more.

Plan originally was to just try and run a cat6 up and over but worried about packet loss at that length and it's difficult to get a powered repeater up on a shed.

Is it worth looking at a wireless solution instead? It would be quite nice to have wifi over the whole yard. Had a quick search for products but not really sure what I would need?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated, oh and unfortunately it easier it NEEDS to be in place Monday so something I can grab off the shelf or have primed.

Cheers

If you used some shielded solid core Cat6, I imagine it'd work at 100 Mb/s even if it didn't at 1 Gb/s. Only way to know really is to try it.

Might be pushing it at that distance with cat6 but worth a shot. Alternatively you could get some multi mode and a couple of converters. Or look at line of sight wireless.

Thanks might try that I guess. Sent my dad off to get a reel of cat6 yesterday but unfortunately hes come back with unshielded with warnings not to get wet on the box  :D

Thanks will have a read.

Can these devices really do like a 200km transmit nowadays!?

Looks like most of the units im seeing on amazon need line of sight? No issue with putting one each end up on a mast is there?

Do you have line of sight?

If so, this will work really well.

Ubiquiti airMAX NanoStation M5 PTP Kit

You'll need a little networking knowledge to set them up, manually setting IPs etc. Nothing difficult.

I would try an external cat5e run first. As far as 'powered repeater' is concerned, a 5 port switch will do this. Just needs power and possibly a waterproof enclosure.

I can get line of sight if they can be mounted on masts. Just need to go up enough to get over the top of the sheds which is about 8-9m probably.

I think Ill just use some old cat5 we have lying around for next week as I don't mind chopping that up and can plug a hub into one of the sheds for now and maybe get that m5 kit ordered for a tidier more permanent solution.

Thanks

Use a switch, not a hub.

Hubs belong in the bin :D

Silly question maybe, but have you considered running fibre with converters on each end?

I had a brief search and it seemed like a decent option. I know nothing about it though. To be honest im just rushing to find the quickest solution but if I can get a temporary line over there for now I will be looking at more elegent solutions.

Im liking the look of that m5 kit at the moment. Will save putting up heavier masts, running a tensioned wire accross the road and save worrying about oversized loads coming through and pulling it all down.

I take it I can just stick a router on the end of it and go from there?

Ha I still use the names interchangeably. I have an old switch about 15 years old or a nice fancy 20 port one from my mining days so should be good on that front.

You'll probably get away with it, but connecting between buildings using copper isn't a great idea. You can potentially have voltage differentials, ground loops, etc.

2 of them will do it, that's cheaper than they usually are.. buy buy buy :D

You can just buy them and use cable ties. I angled a set by using different sized spacers and a chopped to size broom handle, (spacers between broom handle and piece of wood, screw them together), then ziptie the AP to the broom handle.

Roughly a 110M distance here (cabling up would be disastrously expensive in this location). Signal is at 99% and easily maxes out a 100Mbit connection. Required no tweaking or proper measuring, just lined them up by rough guesswork up a 3 tier ladder :D

Connection has never dropped besides manually turning off at wall.

My ping to the secondary AP is 1ms and I'm about 8 switches away from it at the moment.

Lovely job 2x ordered.

Did order some mounts also as they didn't look expensive but if not here by monday or tuesday will be ziptieing! Why can't every item have a prime option!

Sounds good to me, they definitely wont be stressed too much its just to get a connection to remote manage some computers on some biomass units.

Now just to find some masts, probably need to go up 20ft or so to get over the apex of the sheds.

Oh and while im here, do you have any recommendations for an outdoor router I can plug into it? Need to take 2 separate cables from it and as there's no phone data signal it would be nice to have a wifi network to connect to.

Thanks for all the advice.
