Over the past month I've seen 10,345 threads made regarding what headset for gaming and if 5.1 headsets are better for gaming than a stereo / HD Headset.
I was in the same boat myself till last week, when I took the plunge and get a set of Goldring 150's and a BAD £7 desktop mic from those at the World Of PC's :S
Anyway. The sound quality is quite different from that I have had with the Gaming 5.1 Headsets. Its just much better.
Ive had the medusas as well as the Razer Barracudas and The Goldring is just much better for sound quality.
*I've also got a Asus Xonar D2 Soundcard.
Don't get me wrong. For the bass heads out there, nothing has been better for "Gaming" than the medusas for the big Bass, but the Goldrings are just much better all round.
I also think that this would also go for any other good HD/Stereo headphones like the Sennheiser HD 555s.
You DO have to FIDDLE about with the settings a lot, as IMO the whole gaming mode, just makes eveything sound bad.
I did have some issues in Far Cry2 with the sound, as I could hear TOO much!! from everywhere, but I haven't been on that since. Crysis, CSS, HL2 all sound awesome. Especially CSS, which I play the most and need to know ehere people are comeing from.
SOOOOOO
For those of you are going to ask, take it from a skeptic.....
Sterio headset and a mic is a lot better than most 5.1 gaming headsets.
