I am upgrading a server that exchange currently hates.. i.e Xchange complains the board is just too slow for it. Money is tight so i decided just to upgrade the motherboard. I have decided to use the i3 2120 Processor. there is 10 users also to upgrade them mem to ddr3 8gb and also run it on ssd's. Thoughts or advice would be great.

The board is a bundle from another site but this is its specs. OCUK do bungles but i don't want to assemble it. Sorry OCUK

Thanks

Essentially you're using a desktop PC to do a Servers job. I'd, personally, look at getting something like a DL 360 or even an ML (a topic is already in this forum) and a Xeon processor. Save money on SSDs (pointless really as Exchange is write heavy meaning you'd wear them out in no time) and get some decent SAS or U320 SCSI drives.

If this is a critical production server you really don't want to be running it on desktop hardware nor do you want to cut corners.

Thanks for the info.. I will start to look at Xeon. As money is tight i have a budget of £400, so not going to be good. Its only a very very small business the emails aren't that critical to the business but they would rather have there own server running it. Hope there is some good bargains on Ebay.. LOL.. but thanks for the help. Most of the emails are accessed via OWA as staff are either off site or work from home. there is only 3 people who actual access it via outlook install through office.. and there server machine must just handle maybe most 50 to 100 emails per day at most.. and nothing is kept on there 4 that long a period So would a desktop mb handle this or stick with a Server board.. Also yes i agree about the SSD i will stick with a platter drive.

thanks

That's not a brilliant spec to be honest (what's it on now?). Exchange loves ram and fast disks. I'd change the CPU to a quad and have at least 8GB's ram. If you can afford it, I'd go for some form of raid, pref 5 or 10 but at least 1 for redundancy.

It's not an SBS install is it?

Hi and thanks for your advice

in the end i found this Fujitsu TX100s3 at £478 pound with £100 discount.

I am sure this would do the trick. any thoughts.

Thanks Guys

for some reason they prefer/want to host it on there own hardware.. Why I don't know I just think they don't trust another company with there data i suppose and yes i agree with you that would be better and cheaper, but its there decision at the end of the day.. and the customer is always right.. LOL.. But thank for your advice I really do appreciate it.

Make sure you budget for appropriate number of cal's....one for each user, including those using owa....
2010 is way more efficient on the disk usage side of things, major performance improvements over earlier versions, I'd recommend a decent disk subsystem....
