Some advice on a new build.

Hello fellow OCUKers,

I'm thinking of creating a new rig, but I want some advice before I really dig into it. This is less about specific builds and more about general infor for someone perpetually out of the loop.

Okay, my current rig is:
Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz CPU
Radeon HD 7970 3GB GPU
MSI Z87-G43 Gaming Series MoBo.

I'm very excited about VR, specifically the Oculus Rift and they've just released their minimum specs.

GTX 970/AMD 290 GPU
I5-4590 CPU

Now I think my CPU already beats that, but ideally I want a rig that can blow my current rig out of the water, as well as blow the OR's minimum specs out.
I'm also very interested in 4K gaming and would like to get the most out of my games.

So, my question is: Is this possible on a budget on £1000-£2000, if you include a 4K monitor in with the price?

Current rig is fine. You should to wait for the Skylake platform (August) if you want an appreciable performance boost. This will also allow sufficient time for people to evaluate AMD's/Nvidia's performance under Windows 10.

Hmmm, maybe I should wait then. I know that the Rift won't be here until 2016, but I was thinking of 4K gaming too. Will my current rig handle that okay, or would it be a good idea to just upgrade the card?

I've noticed my rig go sub 60 a little even at 1080p.

I would say take a nvidia option due to the work they are doing on virtual reality I can't remember it's name but it's to do with making much better response times ect in VR to reduce motion sickness ect. I'm not sure of Amd doing anyrhing along these lines. Though I don't follow the work they do as much as nvidia so could be wrong :).

Also you can't really get above 60fps at 4k on a single card at the minute, I would wait for next years releases.

It's my recommendation to wait for AMD's new cards. Even though the rumours suggest it's only 4GB for the Fiji XT, at the very least it allows stocks and prices of the 980ti to settle. Right now you couldn't get your hands on a Ti if you wanted one.

If you're into VR then I would do as suggested and just wait till next year till it matures a lot more.

I've noticed people have been recommending SLI, is that require for smooth 4K gaming?

I've heard a lot of games don't get on with SLI very well.
