Some advice on new build please

Hello all,

I want to build/buy a new gaming PC, and was hoping for some advice. My budget is around £700 but I can push that up to £1000 if required.

I need everything apart from monitor, keyboard and mouse and speakers

Firstly, I was wondering whether it is worth just upgrading some parts of my PC, rather than replacing the whole thing. I built this one a few years ago and have not kept up with technology developments at all, so I have no idea how outdated these parts are.

CPU: Q6600 2.4ghz
GPU: GeForce 8800GT 512mb
RAM: 2GB OCZ DDR2 RAM
MOBO: Asus P5KC
HD: Not 100% sure but I think it is a 500GB Seagate 7200RPM
PSU: Corsair HX 520W

If people recommend that I just replace the whole thing and build from scratch, then can anyone please recommend a build that fits around my budget? I also looked at the full systems for sale but there are so many and I literally have no idea where to start, so any thoughts on those as well would be great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

id say new build and possibly reuse your hdd, but get an ssd as boot drive.
maybe something like...
gigabyte z77x d3h
intel core i5 3570k or if you feel you need it then the i7 3770k
samsung 830 128gb ssd
a decent brand 600w + psu, maybe something like the xfx 650w modular bronze one?
amd 7950 gpu
8gb of decent ram 1600 mhz, maybe samsung green, corsair vengeance? along those lines
and the case is personal preference
+ an optical drive if you need one

dont think ive missed anything, im sure someone else can do a far better job at this than me though :)

Thanks for your quick reply! I will find the prices for those parts and see what it comes to.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated

i would have put it in a basket but didnt have the time at that moment :P sorry bout that :) shouldnt be too much though, once you put it in a basket ill tweak around a bit :) i forgot a cooler, unless youd be using the stock one? wouldnt advise it though

No problem, I just added it up and with an Antec 300 case and Lite-on optical drive, that comes to £820. And I've always been told to avoid stock coolers so would probably want to add one of those. Should I add some extra fans too?

I'll come back and check the thread tomorrow - thank you for your help so far!

If you can re-use your old HDD and DVD-RW (providing they are SATA) then I would reccomend this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £184.99
1 x MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr III OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards w/ Nexuiz, Sleeping Dogs & Dirt Showdown PC Games £161.99
1 x Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £84.98
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £83.99
1 x OCZ ZT 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply £63.98
1 x BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Case - Black £49.99
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £28
1 x Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition CPU Cooler (Socket LGA2011/1366/1155/1156/775/ AMD AM3/AM3+/AM2/AM2+/FM1) £27.59
Total : £700.51 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Now some people would choose the Gigabyte D3H over the Asus and I happen to own a D3H. Now while it hasnt given my problems a lot of people are reporting in the motherboard section about post failures due to the motherboard and I wouldnt take the chance.

If you were to give yourself £1000 then this is achievable:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III OC V2 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Sleeping Dogs PC Game £263.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £184.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £112.99
1 x Crucial V4 256GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive £99.95
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 730W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £89.99
1 x BitFenix Ghost Silent Tower Case - Black £89.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £83.99
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 612S CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/1156/1155/775/AM3/AM2+/AM2) £32.99
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £28
Total : £1,000.37 (includes shipping : £11.25).

Thanks for the posts guys!

I have been assessing my financial situation and I may have enough for the £1000 build in Bacon's post

Would anyone else opt for any different parts than this for a £1000 build?

Thank you!

There are a few things you could change:

Cheaper case
Better cooler
Different PSU
Smaller SATA 3 SSD

However I personally would keep these the way they are.

Ok, thank you. The other thing was that you said:

And in the £1000 you put the gigabyte z77x-d3h. Is this different to the D3H you were talking about or the same one?

It is a different one. Prolly the most reccomended one for a SLI / X-fire setup.

Forgot to ask, are you interested in X-fire?

The only real difference is the Z77X-D3H, is better if you want to duel card in the fututre.

Ok, thank you.

And I might be interested in xfire in the future but because of the cost, not straight away.

You could still include the Z77X board in your budget, as you get £20 back on the SSD. Might be a couple of quid over, but it gives you the option should you decide to xfire/sli in the future. Then you would only need to upgrade your Psu.
Forgot to ask, do you have an optical drive?

I'm not sure why the specs are suggesting a new 550w PSU. It's not like the corsairs are crap and the OCZ PSU's awesome...

His PSU is enough.
