Some advice please, for a newbi :)

Hi all
I need some advice on putting together a real good gaming PC, from Overclockers .co.uk. What I know about gaming PC's is virtually "NIL" So I could do with some guidance

I what to go with Intel on CPU, so for gaming is the more you spend on a CPU the better it is? Apart from the "huge" price difference, which is better for gaming: Intel Core I7 Extreme 990X 3.46GHz Hex Core CPU Socket 1366...Or: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz Quad Core Processor Socket 1155...Sorry if that sounds stupid, but I really am wet behind the ears

Hey and welcome to the forums.

If you will only be gaming the best chip is the Intel i5 2500k as not many games use hyper threading, so the i7 2600k is wasted.

If you are looking for somebody to spec you a build i advise you repost this in the general hardware section, where the spec me guys can help you out.

the 990X is pointless, fair enough it is an 'extreme edition' but all that really means is GIANT RIP OFF EDITION! starting from scratch the best gaming system would be Core i5-2500K, not much point in an i7-2600K for gaming to be honest.

also the new 2500K/2600K have improved architecture over the 990X, which makes them a bit faster clock for clock. also worth noting that AMD Bulldozer processors are expected to appear very very shortly (within days apparently!) so might be worth holding off to see if they offer something better for the money.
