even so...

crysis just takes the **** for nothing in terms of visuals... So don't expect to jump into it at 1920x1200 very high 16af/4aa or w/e and get good framerates...

that said,a 2x 8800GTXes will do you very well in most other games, i can assure you
 
You wouldn't believe it, but speaking with one of my friends and he reckons I should go with the 9800GTX... he feels at high res, it would suit the monitor more. If i decided to go 24", he reckons 9800GTX would perform a lot better than the 88000GTX.

He did said the 24" at any res other than the 1920x1200 would be fussy and poor quality, he feels using either cards, the quality would be best on a 22".

Would this be true?

He telling you to go 9800GTX but gives you a link to a 9800GX2 review? Does he even know what he is talking about?

88GTX would be the best on a 24" monitors imo.

On second thoughts even at that high res with or without AA the 9800GTX does appear to be faster than the 8800GTX in almost everything, but its a question of, is the price over the 8800GTX worth it?

probably me getting slightly confused...

If this is the case, should I aim for the 9800GTX if I plan to keep the system for some time?

If you get a GTX just get the cheapest, no need for SSC you should be able to overclock to those speeds easilly.
 
Stay away from the 9800 GTX, its just an 8800 GTS 512mb with a new name and dearer price, 8800 GTX is the faster/better card, more memory, bigger bus, cheaper price as well. :)
 
even with the issue with the 24" screen, low res = fussy screen... or would I need to cut my loses and go for something smaller for a monitor, 22" for example?

and the benchmarks says the GX2 would be best for something like this or ignore it and go with the 88000GTX?

Is he not getting a 24" like, as thats where the 8800 GTX will be the faster, as the 256bit bus on the 9800 isn't enough for high res, AA/AF. :confused:

Theres zero reason to buy a 9800 GTX when the 8800 GTX is cheaper, its faster, it has more memory, and a bigger bus, buying a slower card with less memory, smaller bus just doesn't make sense to me.

Thats what I thought but look at the benchmarks, even at 24" res the 9800GTX is beating an 8800GTX, with AA aswell by looks of it.

Okay, on the following link the 9800GTX is holding it's own or beating the 8800GTX at 1920 x 1200 but that is with either no AA or at best 2x AA

Notice in WIC the 8800GTX still beats the 9800 GTX, Knights of the sea they are identical. It is interesting to note that the 9800GTX is well ahead at all res until you get to 1920 x 1200. By then the reduced memory and bandwidth are starting to show. Put on some AA and the 8800GTX will pull ahead.

Okay they are comparing it to an Ultra but the Ultra whoops even the overclocked 9800 GTX ass in COD4 and Crysis at 1920 x 1200 once you switch on 4xAA. Notice in Crysis the Ultra was a whole 90% quicker than he 9800 GTX at that res.

I could go on and on.

Basically at lower res or at 1920 x 1200 with no AA the 9800GTX will beat the 8800GTX. Search the internet for reviews with AA switched on and you will find that I am right.

If you plan to game with no AA then buy the 9800 GTX.

If you want some AA then buy the 8800 GTX (or even two at the price they are atm)
 
You have basically made my mind up, going with 8800GTX... I'm in the mood to actually say, I'll get 22" monitor and 2x 8800GTX or I could get 24" monitor and just 1x 8800GTX?

Get the 24" monitor and one GTX if that is all you can afford.

You are far more likely to keep the monitor for longer than the gfx card. I kept my old monitor for 4 years before upgrading it.

You can always pick up a cheap 2nd hand GTX later on and go SLI.

Or get the 9900GTX at the back end of this year if the card is starting to struggle.
 
for a res of 1920x1200 the seemingly older 8800gtx is still the top card, i use a 512mb 8800gts at the same resolution but if i try above 2xaa things start to struggle, the newer g92 cards are good as far as shader power but theyre hampered at high res bcause of their 256bit memory interface
