Any thougts on these or other suggestions would be great.

If you like NVidia and want to stick with it then go for the 8800gt. Then if you could afford it down the line add a further 8800gt for SLI as they are supposed to be red hot in SLI now due to driver maturity.

Else go for a 4850 as its faster than the two cards mentioned.

What spec is your PC?

Also, is it an AGP or PCI-E card that you need?

Out of the two you listed a standard 8800GT would probably be the best bang for the buck - then just clock it to OC2 speeds.

However, as has also been mentioned the absolute best bang for the buck card is ATi's 4850.

Athlon X2 4400+ CPU, 3 Gig Ram, XP SP3, PCI-E, am looking to stick with Nvidia as have always leaned that way! Not really sure on difference between 8 and 9 series, most stuff I read say the 9 series is a re-badges 8 series?

Yeah - re-badged. On a real budget the 8800GT is the star of NV's lineup.

8800GTS 512mb is also a stonking card for the money.

However, if you can get a 9800GTX+ (the plus is important) within your budget (perhaps try the 2nd hand market or the clearance section on this site) they clock like crazy and perform excellently.

Thanks for that - does the brand matter that much? - have only really looked at XFX or BFG, if the specs are similar is there any brand to avoid?

4850 1gb or the 8800gt (pref above 512 mb imo).

I don't want to sound like a wet urinary blanket but the two previous nvidia chipsets I had were on XFX, both overheated and twice a member of Overclockers staff informed that the heat issues is just one the reasons why they dont stock XFX graphics cards. I'm sure there are many satisfied XFX customers out there but imho they certainly aren't or at least were not a particularly good card maker at one time. Regarding GPU's however, nvidia are of course not in question.
