My friend is currently waiting for the A10 6800k gaming rig http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-328-OK&groupid=43&catid=2475&subcat=2485
What worries me is we spoke on the phone to a adviser and said we wanted something that was better than a i3 (which he was previously gonna get) I'm worried this processor is not gonna be good enough for his gaming needs he also added a 7950 to the build and to me after looking around albeit quickly I'm worried the cpu will severely bottle neck the system am I right or?
Will this processor be powerful enough for a good while?
Should he go down to a 7850?
He is new to gaming so doesn't have to be high spec just needs to be able to play games at decent levels and want him to enjoy his first experience with a pc

Just don't want my friend who I have helped and pushed towards this site to end up getting a system that bottle necks and isn't good enough for his gaming.
Any help would be much appreciated

The A10 is better than the i3, however it's not meant for a high performance rig, that'd be the FX line on AM3+.

It'll bottleneck, that's for sure, severity depending on clock.
 
Do you think it would be better to downgrade to a 7850?
Surely a 7850 would not bottle neck or maybe 7870?
Or just leave it and see how he goes?
He is on a tight budget was surprised he went for the 7950 tbh
The CPU will be left stock (has stock cooler) as he will be moving away and has no idea about pc tinkering and I will not be there to help.

the thing about CPU gaming benchmarks is that you need to find ones that have been run at roughly the same settings as you are going to play at

you can't apply 1440 / 3-way crossfire scores to 1080 / single card gaming in the same way that looking at 800x600 on a 8800GTS scores

you also need to bear in mind that those tests have all been run at stock - and who doesn't overclock their CPU these days?

you also can't factor in what might happen in gaming that could push the CPU harder than current games do... by spending a small amount extra now, you protect yourself from having to do a whole new system later on

if going Intel, I would go with a K processor as a minimum at this point so that you can overclock it and extend it's viability (even if you buy a pre-overclocked system if not sure about how to do it)
 
Sadly as stated in the op he has already bought this system and is waiting for it to arrive.

But surely 1440p is more stressful than 1080p showing there will be no bottleneck as my initial question in the op asked or?

I understand we cannot look in the future but asking as it is good for now and hopefully a few years on he will be happy.
He is only using it for gaming and as the previous linked benches seem to show that it seems to be plenty for what he needs if I'm reading it correctly or?

1440P is more stressful on the GPU mainly, so it's pushing less frames, but that's pushing less frames because the GPU's limited.

Whereas 1080P it could hit a limit because the CPU can't push more frames but the GPU is capable of doing so.

The bottleneck probably won't be that severe, unless he spends his times on MMO's/RTS's

Ahh that makes complete sense.
Hmmm do you think I should get him to change to a 7850 or stick with the 7950?
 
Wow so the CPU is that bad that it will still bottle neck with A 7850!!

I'm half tempted to tell him to cancel his order if that's the case tbh
 
I think you've misunderstood, I said the difference between the 7950 and 7850 will be noticeable with the A10, so you may's well stick with the A10.

Okay thank you for all the advice I'm gonna stop looking at graphs and worrying myself I will see what it's like when it turns up I'm sure it will be fine plenty of people using worse hardware and gaming fine so...
