lo guys,

havent posted in the motors section before so a big hello to you all

Here's my situation

im about to turn 22 and havent yet got a licence (havent had the time or money really). Im currently doing a placement year in uni and have saved every penny including a nice chunk of student loan, so i have around 8k sitting in the bank ready to burn. Ive sent of for my provisional lisence and hope to pass the test in a few months.

My dream is to own a 1992-1994 Rx7 FD, now i could easily afford the car at the mo, but im reckoning that a restricted driver aint going to get insured on one of those too quickly :S

As this car is over 10 yr old i think it can qualify for clasic car insurance and all that. Basically i want drive one of these beasts asap, and was wondering what you all thought the quickest route to getting insurance would be...

any advice much appreciated :)

Not a great idea at all. Plus you havent even driven one, how do you know that you will like it? The rotary engine has a strange feel and not everyone is going to go for it.

And just because it's 10 years old doesn't mean you'll be able to get classic car insurance :)

Edit - Ahh N.I... dunno what the policy is on classic car insurance there sorry.. :o

For most cars/insurers its 15 years.

Also at 22 years of age with no ncb they might not insure you anyway on one.

Standard practice is to own a crud car for a couple of years getting the hand of driving and building ncb. Then you can own one.

To be completely honest buddy, due to where you live, you will be lucky if you get insured on a 1.2 Corsa for less than £2k.

quoted for the truth

insurance in N.I is crazy.. big time crazy..

thanks for the replies so far, i hear what you are all saying,

i know i would love the car as a work friend of mine, (incidently also 22 but been driving since 17) owns one, and for the last month ive hardly been out of it.

I know the insurance will be the decider, im hoping that either i can get my dad insured on it and myself as secondary :S or get a years NCB for as little money as possible, may involve buying a brand new car outright that comes with 1yr free insurance then selling it and recouping as much cash as possible back.

id be happy with 3rd party only insurance and limited millage, it would only be driven on a saturday or sunday and the odd track day possibly :)

if i can get a year on one for under 2k id go for it, dont know how long ive got before the girlfriend insists on marrige houses and all that expensive stuff, wanna do the fun stuff while i can :p

i know im being a plonker and its a stupid idea but i cant stop thinking about it, maybe start a new thread - looking for best car related psychiatric therapist
