I have a Asus A8n SLI Deluxe motherboard annd an Enermax 600 watt power supply.

Would the following bits be compatible, or would I need to change m/board and psu?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (Socket 939) - OEM

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

Yes the parts are compatible, however since the CPU is OEM you will need to buy a CPU cooler if you don't already have a suitable one.

I was looking at an Artec Freezer Pro socket 939 one for about 13.00... I take it that would be ok?

Superb cooler - have one myself. Easy to fit and good temps too.

The cooler will come with thermal paste pre-applied (MX5 in the case of Arctic Coolers?).

The Enermax will easily be capable of powering the system you describe, I'd have no worries in that regard. If you are thinking about SLi then it might be different but look at that obstacle if/when you come to it.
