Good morning!

Long time lurker of these forums who has finally plucked up the courage to give this OC'ing a go. Reason being i want to upgrade and i cant justify it, unless i accidently fry my CPU & RAM (which im not planning on btw ;))

So this post is in effect a hardware check if you guys dont mind helping me out, i have as follows:

Low end dual core X2 cpu - cannot remember its speed, was ~~£90 a year ago.
DFI Lan party 939 socket mobo
Sapphire X1900 XT 512RAM gpu
2 HDD
2GB of some RAM - no idea on this one, will update when needed!
Jeantech 500W psu

The ram will come later once i get the cpu done, i dont wana bite of more than i can chew. So is this hardware even worth bothering OCing? As i understand it some kit just doesnt 'do' it very well. I would consider a PSU upgrade knowing that this may not be on of those few respected brands.

What cooler should i get?
What temps should i be aiming for?

Thanks a lot :)

The lanparty is probably the best 939 board for clocking but can be fussy with ram, and needs a good quality PSU.
I have an Ulta-d with a 3800x2 running at 2.5, needs 1.525v-core and temps are in the high 40's with an Arctic freezer pro 64 cooler(was very cheap on this site).
Some of the better stepping chips can do 2.8-3.0, so you'll just have to see what it can do.
I think the max temp for these is about 60deg, im not sure though someone else will probably help.

It has been the most reliable board i've owned, still going strong in my htpc( though running at stock now).
Have fun;)

Thats good to know, for once i decided not to skimp on the board, i have the ultra D and 3800x2 sounds very familiar so may have that aswel. Ill check the RAM when i get home but i dont think i bought cheap stuff either way... mate of mine was banging on about CAS something or other and i ran what i bought by him first!

Will i need a new PSU?

My main concern is hoping that it wasnt just a poor PSU, if you think it will handle it then smashing ;)

What 939 cooler is recomended nowadays? I always thought those ram heatsinks were a bit gimmicky so not worth bothering with anything like that?
