Some Chip Tuning Quesions

Hey, i have just been wondering about chip tuning and thought i would ask a few quesions.

First of all, what sort of performance increase do you get? i heard around 20% in most cases, but some have been up to 30% increase.

And would it work just as well on small cars as it would on big cars?

Can it damage the engine? and could it damage a smaller engine more because of the strain?

Hopefully in the future i will chiptune my car, But im not sure if i will have a big car (2lr is big for me :P) or a small car (1.2 - 1.6)

Thanks a lot guys

Sam.

Also anyone had any experiance with chip tuning?

Works well on all engines with forced induction, including small and big, petrol or diesel.

Of course parts will wear quicker if you power it a lot as you are putting them under more stress but from what I have heard it isn't that bad really.

The gains achievable through chipping (and remapping etc etc) are very very dependant on what car you have.

So, what car do you have?

Depends on if you mean "chipping" or a "remap" IMO. Diesels seem to respond ok to chipping, but for a forced induction petrol engine, especially a highly strung one, I'd go with remap every time.

Its not uncommon for the "revo" remap to take my engine from 225bhp to 265bhp which is about an 18% increase.

Whats the differance between remap and chipping then?

Chipping generally just ups fuelling, or in the case of forced induction, fuelling and boost. This can lead to power gains, but at the expense of overfuelling. It will never be as smooth as a custom map either.

A custom map will be tailored to your engine and setup, should be "mapped" whilst on a rolling road, to get the absolute best from the engine in all stages of the rev range.

But chipping is generally cheaper than a decent remap.

Turbo Petrol and Diesels get the most power increases, e.g. 30-40bhp. Non-turbo will increase, but only by 10-12bhp at most, generally. Thats from looking at superchips by the way.

Well im currently on a apprentaship in a BMW garage who are looking into buying a new diognostic machine that can remap engines also so i can get a remap for free i guess

Im not exactly sure what is involved in chip tuning tho.

What is it they do exactly?

Thnx

Diagnostic machine that can remap? Sounds a little odd unless they have a performance rolling road and the knowledge of what changes will do what to the power curve of the engine.

Well im guessing its would be done on the MOT bay rolling road, I dont no if you have seen it, its like a 17" flat screen, its touch screen, not a laptop type one.

ill try and find a pic and some info...

BMW won't remap cars. They will void the warranty of any car they find having been remapped and log it on their database.

1. I dont have a BMW.

2. I work for a independent BMW specialist garage, not for williams them selves.

And to be honest paradigm im not 100% on how it works as i have never done it or even seen it done, i just know that the machine does do it, I will try and find out more in work tomoro.
