Some fps problems.

I play hl2/Counter Strike Source at a competetive level (for large amounts of prize money), in order to facilitate this, I built my own pc (using parts from the best site in the uk *top left corner*) For the first month or two my fps was a dream, everything on high, full aa, full af 150-250 fps, after a holiday I come back, and I'm getting 30-70, nothings changed while I was away, the computer was off.

My spec is as follows:

AM2 Single core 3800+ (overclocked from 2.4 ghz to 2.78ghz)
ASUS M2N32-SLI-DELUXE
HIS Silent Cooler x1900XT
2gb Corsair DDR2 PC6400 RAM (2x1gb)
250 GB 7200 RPM SataII HD.
Zalman cpu cooler.
Tagan 580W psu

When I first brought my pc I was getting anywhere between 150-250 fps everything on high.

However more than a month back, as soon as I came back from holiday, I started having fps problems, sometimes when I booted up I'd have the normal 150-250, however since then I've been at aa constant 40-70.

And before anyone says it, YES, vsync is off, off and off again.

I get the exact same fps at 1600x1200 than at 640x480.
I get the exact same fps with everything on low
I get the exact same fps with every fps config imaginable
I get a range of 50-90 fps on contra
All my temps are fine.
I've virus scanned, spyware scanned, defragged. And I'm this close to formatting (last ditch honestly, I have so much stuff on here I couldn't bear to lose.)
I've updated my drivers.
I've been running prime95, and I'm getting the right benchmark results for my cpu @ the current clock speed.
I've run memtest.

I'm completely baffled honestly, if anyone has any insights I'd be very grateful, I'm this close to reformatting and losing over 150 GB of data..

I've been ok with it at 60 for a bit, but it's ******* me off now when it gets to 40 in the heat of a match.

I'm proceeding to download 3dmark 03 as I type this, will edit with results after

Just completed 3dmark03, scores seem quite low

The most obviously low score was cpu test 2, scoring just 22.1 fps

17440 3d marks

I'm afraid i would recommend a format. From time to time it's always good to do this, as windows has an annoying habit of being crappy :p

Were there any major updates to Source while you were away on holiday? Maybe you should check the Steam forums to see if anyone else has noticed any major dip in performence recently.

Either way, maybe try reinstalling Steam and the games. Have you used the Ati/nVidia driver cleaner (completely wipes out your gfx card drivers to install "fresh" drivers without any old ones lingering around that could cause conflicting issues) If that doesn't work, maybe try just reinstalling Windows?

If that don't work, then yeah... I suppose a format would be in order. I would look into backing up your stuff, though - always handy to have another hdd for this!

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Have you compared this performance drop in CSS/HL2 with another game?

I've often heard people moaning that their CSS framerates are steadily deteriorating...reinstalling Steam+games sometimes helps.

Also, OOI, you are a competitive gamer who runs fulls eye-candy? Good man...I was always under the impression pro/competition gamers strip their games down to the bare minimum to remove anything that might hinder their play (i.e. HDR in CSS)
