Hi All,

Well my system has finally reached the end of it's life.

After my 4870x2 GPU went I purchased a R9 280X WindForce but found that the problems were still there. basically the system hangs randomily, sometimes not even under stress and it's failing Intel stress test and DOS memory tests. Guessing that either the i7 965 Extreme is dying or the Asus Rampage extreme 2 is dying...or both! This is with a second GPU as well so I can rule out the 280x. I'm pretty sure the 12gb of Corsair DDR3 is ok but not 100% sure.

I've done all the normal stuff like a fresh windows install after a format, BIOS upgrades, individual memory module checks, CPU visual check (it's cooled by the Corsair Hydro system and never went above 50c even under stress). I now suspect something "went" on the setup causing the 4870x2 to die with it.

So got to the point that i'm thinking new setup :-)

Anyway this is where I need help.

Processors have moved on a bit since I purchased the i7 965 Extreme. I'd would like a pretty powerful CPU to replace the 965 and have looked at the i7 4820K as a option, I know this is only quad Vs Hex core put it's a damn sight cheaper than replacing the 965 with another 965 and some benchmarks suggest it's far quicker than the 965(?)

Would pair this up with a Asus Sabertooth x79 motherboard and some new RAM (2x8gb DDR3 Corsair Platinum 1866Mhz or 32gb if I can stretch to it). Ideally I'd like to go to the Asus IV rampage Extreme Black but it's mega bucks.

Now all this comes in at around £670. Am I getting the best i can for this budget? Would stretch to £750 total budget if someone has some good pointers and suggestions.

many thanks for any suggestions or help.

What are you going to be doing with the PC?

There's little point in having a hex-core over a quad-core for virtually any games out there today, but if you're doing something that makes use of a 6 core CPU then you'd be better off going for this:

but thats an awful lot of money to drop on a CPU, when your needs may be perfectly adequately met by the £168 i5 4670K
