I got bought a Golf Mk4 2000 from my parents to use for work etc. I've had a look under the bonnet just to check a few things and noticed I was maybe missing 2 parts on my air intake?

Picture not mine, but same engine

The one circled in red is what I'm actually missing, but I'm not sure if there is also supposed to be like a right angled block at the one circled dark blue?

I'm guessing my actual filter is on the engine block circled by the light blue?

Could anyone shed some light on the matter please?

If this is the case, will it actually cause any problems?

Many thanks. :)

Can you post a picture of your engine?

Removing the airbox and fitting a cone-shaped air filter is common. Do you know who had it before? Did he say anything about any mods? Did he seem like the type to do that?

It just lets the engine get colder air from outside, not having one will just mean you're getting less dense and cold air into the engine, resulting in marginally less power being made. It wont cause any damage, but it's probably worth ripping one out of a scrappy and fitting it.

Definite breakers job for the parts. Probably cost £10-£20 and 15-20mins to fit. Job done.

Any idea why they are missing? Have your parents been using a kerb side auto's or was it like that when they acquired it?

As above that's an easy fix - weird intake setup though given how much space there is on the right hand side of the engine bay, i'm sure that's where the VAG 8v 1.6 runs rather than the 16v Routing there - odd

Sorry for the confusion, was in a rush when I posted it.

My parents bought it off their friend, for me. That's how it came.

I thought he had initially put a K&N on it, but that would be pointless considering the air filter seems to be in the engine cover.
