Hey guys,

New poster here. I'm looking to spec. a new rig as a few weeks ago my GPU buggered and I held off buying a new one until I'd been on my holidays. Long story short, when I got back from holiday I had a letter from the taxman telling me I'd paid too much tax this year and that I have a fairly hefty rebate coming my way: excellent!

So I've decided to get a new GPU and upgrade my rig at the same time as my current spec (in my signature) is getting slightly long in the tooth now and my tax rebate money is burning a hole in my pocket! Unfortunately I've lost touch with the components world so I don't have a lot of an idea as to what is good at the moment.

Cutting to the chase, I'll use the PC for general use and gaming. I don't need a super-rig, but something nice and powerful that will therefore keep going a while is preferable.

I have screen/speakers/mouse/keyboard/storage (SSD main drive and storage HDD) as well as a decent power supply, so I shouldn't need them. My OS (7 Home Premium) is an OEM version so I'm not sure if I'll need another copy of that, too).

Total budget is £600-800. Obviously the lower this can be kept the better, but I can go to the top of this range if needs be.

What I'll definitely need/want:

1 x CPU (probably looking at the i5 3570K)
1 x Motherboard (had a brief look and the Asus P8Z77-V is on offer at the mo. and seems like it would fit my needs)
1 x GPU (considering the GTX660 - other NVidia cards just seem too expensive, but I'm willing to go with an AMD card instead)
1 x RAM - probably 8GB (had a brief look and was overwhelmed by the options so some tips there would be good)
1 x CPU cooler (currently have the Noctua in my sig. but doubt that will fit the new socket, if it will I don't need one)
1 x DVD-RW/BR drive (doesn't really need to be BR but if it's not too much more expensive I may as well get something BR capable)

What I would like to add if my budget permits it:
1 x case (I have an Antec 900 at the moment but I'd prefer something a bit quieter and plainer/less showy)

Thanks a lot for any help any of you can offer, I really do appreciate it. Cheers,

Jim

How much will my specific choice of GPU affect various games? Certain things made unplayable or just small differences here and there?

Take a look at the chart i provided that will give you some examples, some games work better with amd or nvidia cards.

Really you want the best card you can afford

Its your call

Bump for a bit more more help.

I went ahead an ordered these parts from OCUK on Sat.

Got an email this morning saying that the Corsair Low Profile Vengeance RAM was out of stock and they didn't know when it will come back in. They have asked if I want an alternative soooo, can anyone suggest an alternative please?

Never heard of TeamGroup (whereas I have Corsair, in fact have some of their stuff presently), are they a trusted manufacturer?

Colour has absolutely no bearing on my product choice, they'll be inside a computer!

Will go with the TeamGroup ones I think.

Although having said that the GeIL ones seem to be faster with tighter timings.
TeamGroup: 1600MHz 11-11-11-28 PC3-12800
GeIL: 1866MHz 10-10-10-32 PC3-14900

Will this make any (everyday noticeable) difference?

Looks like a solid build either way.

I have found corsair ram to be very reliable and perform well.

The samsung ones have been praised quite a bit on these forums - maybe someone who has them and tried them against the ones your looking at could comment.

Did some searching on the google. The Crucial stuff is listed as compatible for my board, seems just as fast as the Corsair stuff (speeds the same, timings are 9-9-9-24 Corsair vs. 9-9-9-27 Crucial so not a massive difference) so I've (hopefully) amended my order for the Crucial stuff instead.
