Some help with fans

Hi

Just had to upgrade my motherboard. Have a q6600 CPU and as I am quite happy with this decided on the Gigabyte GA-G41m-combo. I did have the Asus P5KC.

On the Asus board the board controlled the speed of both the CPU fan and also the 2 case fans I have (front and rear). However the new board only controls the CPU fans speed and the single 3 pin case fan plug only powers it on full.

So I have been looking at alternatives. I have came across the idea of PWM fans. Now this is my question. It is my understand that if I replace both case fans with PWM fans and get a PWM connector cable I would then plug all 3 fans (case and CPU) into this cable, connect the cable to a mowlex connector for power and connect the 4 pin to the motherboard CPU connection.

Am I correct in this thinking?

Thanks for your help

I also ran across this Gigabyte feature, where even on reasonably high end boards, only the CPU header has any form of control circuit. In my case I didn't want to go buy 4 pin PWM fans so built my own converter that allows use of 3 pin fans off a PWM motherboard.

The cable you speak of will work of course. It will provide RPM feedback of the main fan. All fans will receive the same control signal and so will speed up and down along with your CPU fan.
