Hi guys,Firstly a little back ground. i have recently took the step and bought myself a new pc the "Titan Spinosaur" I am delighted with it. I upgraded the dvd drive to a blue ray player/burner and got a GTX 570 graphics card, NS caviar black 1TB 6/Gb/s hard drive. I also invested in a new monitor the Benq 24" widescreen. Basically i wanted a good gaming rig with which i could watch blue ray movies on a good screen with good sound.. now thisa is where i am unsure.

The mother board has onboard 7.1 , do i use this or do i get a good sound card. I also play ww2 online and the directional sound is key to find out where the enemy are coming from etc, plus having the blue ray would it be better for a good card instead of the onboard? I built pcs years ago and im lost to all the new stuff now. If i remember it was always better to free resources up and add a sound card. I have one in my old system which is a creative audigy se i think. I was looking through the forums and i see that this topic about soundcards and usb headsets has been mentioned a few times.

Basically i have bought a good rig and i am unsure whether to get a good sound card and headphones that give me directional sound or go for the usb ones and leave the sound card as is. to complicate the matter further i have bought a g510 keyboard which has audio inputs but i beleive that id be best using the onboard one instead? jeez im stuck lol

The money side isnt really an issue so usb headsets or 3mm jack with soundard and a pair of Razer Carcharias.

I dont really use speakers mostly headsets but like i said i now have a blue ray player, sorry if i repeated myself and thanks for reading

Right, Onboard is good to a certain extent. Basic gaming, music & movies generally the sound is fine with the motherboard you will have. However if you are picky like me I need to know exactly where the sound came from. Currently I am using an XFI Titanium Fatal1ty edition which I have found the best sound card for gaming. Footsteps are clear and I can pin point enemies to an exact location up, down or behind walls. I did try the Asus Xonar D2X. For sound quality it is superior to the XFI Titanium - but for gaming it was not as precise as I would like it to have been so i reverted back to my old Titanium. It also depends on how you are listening to the audio. If you are thinking of getting a soundcard, buy a 3.5mm Jack headphone. I just put the Roccat Kave on special offer, its the headset I use. For 3D positioning so far its the best headset I have used (been through quite a few) But USB is digital signal so it wouldn't matter about onboard sound or soundcard :)

Thanks for the prompt reply, but im running windows 7 and i believe creative arent that good these days. what about the blueray playback on board or different card. Some previous posts state that the new headsets with the usb connection are ok but are virtual etc thay would then save me getting a sound card but for the over spec of my new pc would it be better a good top end card with a good headset as i use in game comms, i almost bought the logitech g35 or the corsair hs1, i believe the other one is out without the usb too. Hmm the choices. So a good card and a good headset for 3d gaming and blueray entertainment, or just a good usb headset.. bah -))

I use windows 7 and xfi titanium. Not had any problems with it, I also do own a pair of G35's but dedicated sound card is a lot better. However G35 and HS1 are fantastic :)

I think im going to go for the asus xonar d2x and either the corsair hs1a or the razer carcharias i believe that this will suit my needs for the dvd and also for the surround gaming experiance, what headset do you guys reckon out of those two? and is this sound card overkill or would it be a great one to have. The onboard one is Realtek ALC892 8 Channel HD Audio.
