Some intel basic info needed please

Well today my asrock 990fx amd board has decided to play dead!

So here is my chance to go intel!!

Just want to know so info with sockets etc.

When looking at chips it says 2011/1155 etc but when choosing a board it's z87/ x89 etc and I'm wondering what chip goes with which boards etc.

I would like an i7 but which one???
Are i7s and i5 interchangeable incase I choose a board then change my mind, or funds run low.

Im using my current HDD, SSD, RAM so should be able to free up some funds for board and chip.

So.... And good board and chip combos.
Preferably an i7

I agree mate, bit confusing.

I want to get some rough figures, mid range i5 prices to top end
And i7 prices. Budget is open ATM just want some good combos with some prices, and experiences.

I'm staying away from asrock!! Lol

Would a top end i5 beat a low end i7?
What's a good overclocking combo too?

The reason I'm saying no budget as I don't know what's good for money or what's over priced and il be willing to look at different variables

Yeah il be using single gpu. So maybe the i5 might be a wiser choice.
It will have to a 'K' so I can clock it.

The Msi boards look really good as do the Asus maximus vi

I don't need to water cool it, but I maybe would like the option in the future

I know the chipset has to match up, so it doesn't matter is it's z89 or z77 or whatever it is ?

I'm guna sit and read into tonight and see what features I want

Well that's good as I'm looking at z87

Either the g1 sniper 5
OR
the Asus maximus vi

Both non water cooled standard (for now)

I'm going for a corsair closed cooler maybe 100i or 105
Plus I'm going for the r9 280 so very similar setup to yours mate

Plus with the 1150 socket I could go i7 next year maybe too
