Hi,

I'm hoping to get some info on the iPhone from the sort of people who use it heavily (jailbroken, etc) and most sites reviewing it just don't go anywhere near the detail that us lot do.

If anyone can help me with these questions I'd be very grateful!

1. Is there any app to record video currently? If so, what are the specs of the video it saves (format, resolution, fps?)

2. Out of the box is the dock the only way to charge the iPhone (and therefore I must leave my PC on to charge it overnight?)

3. How much space is available to me on a new 8GB iPhone (for apps, music, videos, games etc)

4. Can the iPhone playback normal AVI material (or divx files) with a suitable app? Or must all video be encoded into Apple friendly files (bummer).

5. What is the easiest way to use a normal bog standard mp3 for ringtone and message tone (do they HAVE to be converted into some weird apple format?) (the faq says it must be converted but I wonder if there is a newer/easier way to do this?)

Thanks a lot!

I am waiting for mine to ruck up.

The box includes a plugin charger.

These answers refer to a standard non jailbroken iphone.

Files must be in the mp4 format... anything that plays in iTunes will play on the iPhone. http://www.isquint.org/ will do this painlessly,m though it is Mac OS X

There is no video recording facility currently.

I think you lose less than a gig to the operating system, though I can't find a reference right now.

You can ringtone any* file from your iTunes library. You can duplicate files in your itunes library and edit them down with start and end piints of your choosing. (*not dure about DRMed files)

I'm not a fan of ringtones, my phone's either in front of me or in my front pocket. So vibrations are generally enough. Also means I don't have to worry about it going off with something tasteless when I'm having a conversation with someone, I can just disreetly ignore the caller in my pocket.

Again, same. Very rarely have it ringing, usually on vibrate. Are you my long lost Brother perchance?

Parents managed to keep it quiet if so. Do you look like me?

But how do you get it to choose a song as a ringtone thou?

Tested now.

1. Select a song you want to make your ringtone. Shrink it to 30 seconds or less. You cannot exceed 30 seconds. This can be done by chosing a start and end point within iTunes. Right Click track in iTunes, Get Info, Options, Start Time, Stop Time. You must do this before converting to AAC... as the AAC will only be the snippet you chose.

2. Right click on the track in iTunes, and convert it into an AAC file. AAC may need to be chosen in the Importing section of Advanced in iTunes if you have changed the settings. This is non destructive - a duplicate will be created in the AAC format.

3. Right click again and 'Show in Finder' [or Show in Windows Explorer]. Your file will be smaller than the original and end with the .m4a extension.

4. Rename the extension from .m4a to .m4r

5. Drag MPR file back to iTunes. The file will automatically appear under Ringtones.

5a You may wish to clean up, i.e. delete the duplicated file in itunes, delete the .m4a file, and remove the Start and Stop times from the original track.

6. Sync.
