Ok so my current rig (well i wouldnt say rig but yeah :D) is:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Dual Core @ 2.7Ghz (Brisbane) (Socket AM2)
Memory: 4GB DDR2 800Mhz (240pin)
HDD: 320GB SATA
PSU: 350W ____ (something else i cant find out)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9500GT 1GB
MB: FOXCONN A74MX-S/A74MX-K
Case: Some random crappy default stock one (only 1 case fan @ back)

And for xmas im just wondering whether to upgrade completely or upgrade everything apart from the motherboard, cpu and ram. For example

CPU: The Same
Memory: The Same
HDD: ^- Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 32MB Cache Hard Drive SATA II 300MB/s 8.5ms 7200rpm - OEM
PSU: ^- OCZ StealthXStream2 600w Silent ATX2 Power Supply 80PLUS
GPU: ^- ATI Radeon 5770 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Graphics Card - Retail (need to choose on gpu, either 5770, msi cyclone 460 768mb, or any ideas)
MB: The Same
Case: ^- Antec Nine Hundred Black Ultimate Gamer Case

The changed upgrades there will cost around approx £280 inc. vat

New build? or an upgrade? + would that upgrade actually be powerful enough with the kept specs? (cpu, mb, ram)

+ if i get an upgrade instead of a new build, i will eventually upgrade the MB, Processor and ram when i get the money instead of one big chunk for a new one.

Ideas, comments, suggestions, changes please :)

Ahh yeah forgot to mension. It will be for moderate / near hardcore gaming. Such as maybe battlefield, crysis, gears of war, R.U.S.E =P basically gaming, Just to run my current games and maybe some new ones much smoother and higher quality. + the new case might allow a slight CPU overclock, maybe @ 3-3.5Ghz?

well the cpu support list for that motherboard isnt the best I have seen, most of the cpu's you can buy now is not supported or listed

http://www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusupportlist.aspx?type=mb&model=A74MX-K&cputype=

but you maybe able to find a cpu in that list for sale somewhere/second hand.

or you can just keep your current cpu/ram and motherboard and make a few upgrades to other components, then change the cpu/ram/motherboard next year too new tech.

such as buying this lot now,

I'd be looking to sell that lot and build new. If you can hang on until the new Intel/AMD platforms in the new year, all the better.

EDIT: But if you want to do it in two stages, Stulid's suggestion above is a great first stage.
