Some PS3/XBox 360 questions

I'm looking to pick up either an XBox 360 or a PS3 at some point in the future, probably as part of a mobile phone contract, and just want to check a few things. I'm just looking to confirm some things, so I hope we can manage this without it ending up in a flamewar over which is better...

1) The PS3 comes with inbuilt wireless, but the 360 doesn't right? Once you factor in an official wireless adapter, the 360 Elite costs as much as a PS3 slim. Can I just pick up a wireless access point on ebay for a tenner and use it as a bridge?

2) PSN is free, but XBox Live isn't, right?

3) The game libraries are comparable, bar the odd exclusive, right? Are there any exclusives that could really sway a person with no particular prior wants?

4) The 360 has backward compatibility, but new PS3s don't, yeah?

5) The PS3 plays Blu-Rays, which of course the 360 doesn't, but both will upscale DVDs to 1080p over HDMI, right? How do they each fare as a DVD player, particularly bearing in mind that my less techy wife will be using whichever I get? Does either come with a remote in the box, or do you have to buy it seperately?

6) Is the PS3 more reliable than the 360? Are the newer 360s more reliable than the older ones, which by all accounts were quite fail-happy?

Other things swaying me, which are under consideration, would be the fact that I have a mate with a 360 that I could trade games with, that I prefer the 360 controller, or that the PS3 has Blu-Ray, which I might want in the future.

Cheers for any help you can offer.

1). If the wireless bridge can be emulated as a ethernet connector level then yes. But wired is really the way to go

2). correct

3). I have both consoles, and I would say PS3 is more my type of exclusives: MGS4, GT5. Never really like Halo and GOW etc. User dependant.

4). correct, but not all xbox games are compatable

5). I can't stand the 360 as a dvd player, way too loud. Give up if you want it as a DVD player. No remote in both consoles.

6). Newer 360s are ment to be much much better, your looking for a Jasper unit. If you are buying a new one in the shop, then it most lickly be a Jasper

Can I just pick up a wireless access point on ebay for a tenner and use it as a bridge? Im pretty sure some on here have done that, im unsure if it needs to be a particular type or any old thing

2) PSN is free, but XBox Live isn't, right? Yep, thats correct, but you get what you pay for with XBL (not that i think its worth the price in comparisson) and you can get it for around the £25 if shop around

3) The game libraries are comparable, bar the odd exclusive, right? Are there any exclusives that could really sway a person with no particular prior wants? Depends on what games you like, and if you have a gaming PC, but the best way is to have both if possible.

4) The 360 has backward compatibility, but new PS3s don't, yeah? New PS3 at the moment only work with PS1 games, but there is plenty of rumors of PS2 games coming to PSN store.

Both dont have remotes, the PS3 one is Bluetooth and the 360 IR, so the PS3 one may be a problem if you use something like a harmony all in one remote. As for DVD playback, I would always use my PS3 rather than the 360, its queiter in use has better upscaling, according to tests, you can use bravia Sync(or simillar), this may negate need of a remote for the PS3.

6) Is the PS3 more reliable than the 360? Are the newer 360s more reliable than the older ones, which by all accounts were quite fail-happy? I would say they are pretty much the same now, still hear about the odd new 360 dieing, the PS3 slim is a bit new to get a proper idea of how reliable they are.

Other things swaying me, which are under consideration, would be the fact that I have a mate with a 360 that I could trade games with, that I prefer the 360 controller, or that the PS3 has Blu-Ray, which I might want in the future. These are all points that only you can decide upon, you could always get your mate to get a PS3 :D

Cheers for any help you can offer.

Hope they help a bit, in the end have them both if possible its the only way not to miss out on games, but a few on the 360 make there way to the PC for normally a superior version, where as the PC dont get many PS3 exclusives unless they are SOE MMO games.

Just how noisy is the XBOX 360 as a DVD player? All our AV stuff is in a cupboard with a door on the front so I'd hope that would stop the noise being too much of an issue...

EDIT: Assuming keeping it in a cupboard isn't going to cause it to crap it's pants in the heat and fall apart.

Putting the Xbox in an enclosed space may amplify the noise depending on the acoustics! It is noticeable when watching a DVD but never a problem for games.

Yes you can just use a wireless access point iirc

2) PSN is free, but XBox Live isn't, right?
Yup

3) The game libraries are comparable, bar the odd exclusive, right? Are there any exclusives that could really sway a person with no particular prior wants?
Difficult one as it's all down to personal preference. I personally find the PS3 library better as i own a decent PC and most 360 exclusives eventually make it to the PC whereas very few (read: None) of the PS3 exclusives make it to the PC. As of late i'd also argue that the PS3 exclusives are of a greater quantity and quality than the 360 titles but again thats personal preference.

4) The 360 has backward compatibility, but new PS3s don't, yeah?
The 360 has backward compatibility with quite a few xbox titles but not all. The PS3 has backward compatibility with nearly all PS1 titles but at present no PS2 titles (however rumour is this may change)

5) The PS3 plays Blu-Rays, which of course the 360 doesn't, but both will upscale DVDs to 1080p over HDMI, right? Imo the PS3 is the better DVD player, picture quality is equal on both however i prefer the remote for the PS3 and the unit tends to make less background noise. There's also the fact that the PS3 supports optical along with HDMI from the get go whereas the 360 requires and adapter/some modifications before you can use both. Remotes are available for both yes but they have to be bought separately.

6) Is the PS3 more reliable than the 360? Are the newer 360s more reliable than the older ones, which by all accounts were quite fail-happy?
The PS3 is still more reliable than the 360 but the 360 is no longer horrendously faulty as it used to be

The 360 would likely have a hissy fit if operated in an enclosed space (a PS3 would too for that matter). The amount of noise they create changes from unit to unit but put it this way; i've used my 360 to watch DVDs once, and doubt i ever would again if i could avoid it.

The 360 is pretty useless for watching DVDs, unless you have a detached house and can crank up the surround sound system to full ;). My brothers can be heard from downstairs if there is no TV or anything on. Ive even put some ultra soft rubber feet on it, that helped quieten my PC down, but it didn't help.

That said, it wouldn't be my main consideration when picking a console. Decent DVD players can be picked up very cheap these days. I think Bluray players can be picked up for around £100 now as well.

hey von.

I have owned an Xbox when they first were released and a PS3 more recently.

If you want a blu-ray/DVD player and light gaming then the ps3 is a fantastic choice. It has an HDMI port and a SPDIF port should you need it. The xbox is really loud and not ideal for movie watching.

I understand you can use a wireless extender for the xbox. I sold my ps3 over xmas and went for a media streamer for mkv support and bought a standalone panny blu-ray player.

I have now ordered an xbox this week purely as a games machine, I got lonely on my ps3 as all my mates have an xbox, not a single one had a ps3. For the xbox you may want to consider this when deciding as well.

PS3 - if you want a games/blu-ray/media streamer

Xbox - if all your mates have one. gaming only.

PS: The ps3 remote is £18 and you really need one as trying to use the ocntroller as a remote is annoying. If you want HDMI and only have a SPDIF reciever like me you will also have to buy the HDMI cable pack, which includes a spdif adaptor dongle. If you need your audio to go into a reciever that only has SPDIF ports, if you don't a £2 HDMI cable will do fine!
