Hi all, I was hoping for advice on getting a new PSU

Following some helpful advice on this forum, I have got a GTX 970 which looks great and I am looking forward to trying out. Main issue is my rubbish old PSU doesnt have an 8 pin cable to power it. It's a 450W FSP 450-60APN

I used a couple of calculators online and it looks like my usage will be about 400W

I was hoping to delay getting a new PSU until the next pay check - could I get away with a 6 to 8 pin adaptor for a few months or should I get a new PSU straight away?

If so, what would you recommend?

I was recommended this one https://www.overclockers.co.uk/super-flower-leadex-gold-650w-fully-modular-80-plus-gold-power-supply-white-ca-024-sf.html

Is this one any good or is it a false economy to spend a little less? (they both seem to have 6+2 pin cables)https://www.overclockers.co.uk/corsair-builder-series-cx-600w-modular-80-plus-bronze-power-supply-cp-9020060-uk-ca-117-cs.html

This is the GTX 970 i have gone for https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-geforce-gtx-970-turbo-oc-4096mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-377-as.html)

Here is the rest of my build:
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i5-2500k Quad Core (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache) + HD Graphics
Motherboard ASUS® P8Z77-V LX: USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, ATI®CrossFireX
Memory (RAM) 8GB SAMSUNG DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB)
Hard Disk 1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 32MB CACHE
DVD/BLU-RAY Drive 12x BLU-RAY ROM DRIVE, 16x DVD ±R/±RW
Power Supply 450W FSP 450-60APN
Processor Cooling INTEL SOCKET LGA1155 STANDARD CPU COOLER
Sound Card ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO

When talking about power requirements the overall wattage is only part of the equation.

The GTX 970 requires 28 amps on the 12v rail - your FSP unit provides 36 amps, so in theory should be fine. That said FSP are an average OEM at best and you'll likely be running the power supply at 90%+ of its capacity when under heavy load which will stress the internals.

If problems arise they will at best present themselves as random system crashes, or at worst with a blown PSU which may or may not take out other components with it.

With all that in mind a quality 550w unit would be the best bet, and the one linked above is an excellent choice at a great price

Not my usual recommendation but as my usuals are still all out of stock and putting my dislike of Corsair aside the RM550x is a very good psu at a very good price (goes back up tomorrow) with a 7 year warranty. If you want gold rated and fully modular you can't really do better (out of the instock psu's) for the money.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £74.89
(includes shipping: £9.90)

I have Super Flower Golden Green HX 550W which is on offer, its very good but the 8pin is little short, I would avoid Asus turbo its loud go for Strix if it's still on offer with cash back
